Teaching Data Joins: A Conceptual Approach Using SQL, Alteryx, and Tableau

Abstract The many ways of joining data can be confusing for beginning, or even intermediate, analytics students. Several accounting information system textbooks cover SQL and joins, but few supplemental resources exist that reinforce clarify join concepts. In this paper, we use a multi-tool approach in three-part assignment teaching joins using three different software tools. We four types (INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER RIGHT FULL JOIN) Microsoft Access, Alteryx, Tableau. further demonstrate how the Tableau model, separate logical physical layers, implements various depending on needs particular visualization. Overall, thus help students develop comprehensive understanding to implement them widely-used also gives practice selecting, using, validating analytics.
